As Jung would have it, sometimes along with the light there is a deep but unrecognised shadow. Hence teachers who may be very advanced on one level could still have undigested defects such as irascibility or greed. It usually takes a long time to transform all the negative aspects of our consciousness into wisdom energy - especially when these negative characteristics are not admitted...A truly enlightened master is rare just because it is easy for the ego to slip in again through the back door and claim ownership of whatever spiritual progress has been made so far. Since traditionally a Guru is never questioned or made accountable for his actions or decisions, there is a great scope for corruption. The disciples themselves often collude in maintaining this situation... The tantras advise us to scrutinise a teacher carefully before acceptance... Meantime we should rejoice in the pure conduct of the many genuine teachers who would never swerve from the path of a bodhisattva.
