As Machinedrum, the electronic musician Travis Stewart explores the intersection between hip-hop and the hyped tempos of jungle, and on September 30th the artist will release his Ninja Tune debut, the Vapor City LP. “Gunshotta” is the second single from the new work, the follow up to “Eyesdontlie“, and the new track receives the video treatment from the UK film company Institute For Eyes today, and will also be released October 14th as a 12″ EP. Stewart explains, “”Gunshotta” is the theme for the Gunshotta Ave. district of Vapor City. Filled with crime, paranoia and darkness, Gunshotta Ave. is a street you don’t want to walk down alone.” Using deep spacious bass, a beautiful dark palette of “micro-sampled” vocals, and punishing array of off-kilter rhythms, Stewart paints a cinematic street portrait using a sonic equivalent to chiaroscuro. The result is a track that seems to create it’s own place from volumes of deep bass sound and the flickering, filtering illuminations of clipped vocal samples. The video for the cut follows a similar aesthetic tact as we watch a group “feral teenagers” who live in the dystopian world that is Gunshotta Ave. liveeyetv.org/2013/09/24/video-machinedrum-gunshotta/
