As Rwanda marks the 20th anniversary of the 1994 genocide may we - TopicsExpress

As Rwanda marks the 20th anniversary of the 1994 genocide may we all be reminded that we must remain vigilant in a world ripe for similar atrocities to occur. I had the opportunity to visit my friends, the Routtés, who live in Rwanda in December of 2012. We spent time visiting a number of genocide memorials. While I certainly received deeper insights into the reasons and scope of the atrocities that unfolded between April and July 1994 I was left with more questions than answers. This is the nature of reflection when it comes to processing such unimaginable events, I suppose. What we have learned over the past 20 years though is that Rwanda has risen like a phoenix from the ashes of despair and pain. Rwanda is now one of the cleanest and safest nations on the continent and boasts one of Africa’s greatest economic success stories (with an annual GDP growth rate of 8%). Still, much needs to be done in order to heal and unify the people of Rwanda. Transformation is a process and often it is a process that never can reach an ending point. For the people of Rwanda I lift up prayers of continued peace, grace, and healing. May the world learn from Rwanda, may we never stand idle and allow the forces of evil ravage life from the heart of good again. Rwanda has taught us that light will always consume darkness, good will always triumph over evil, and death becomes powerless when met with the prayers of a nation. cnn/2014/04/05/world/africa/car-ban/index.html?hpt=wo_bn7
