As-Salaam Alaikum, Oftentimes, as parents, we can become - TopicsExpress

As-Salaam Alaikum, Oftentimes, as parents, we can become extremely frustrated because our children, especially the teenagers, fail to heed our advice, guidance and counsel. These feelings can be compounded when the advice involves issues of religious import. While we should definitely do our best to direct the young generation, we cannot allow ourselves to obsess over the outcome of our efforts. We have to realize the outcome is with Allah. He reminds us in the Qur’an, “You can desire nothing, except what is desired by Allah. Verily, Allah is All-Knowing, Wise (76:30).” This means that nothing we desire will come to be unless it is consistent with what our Lord desires. That being the case, we must learn to depute our affair to Allah. This idea, known as “Tafweeḍ” in Arabic, should be an integral part of our religious life. There is an insightful story told by the great scholar Abdul Wahhab al-Sha’rani, in his book, Tanbih al-Mughtarrin (Alerting the Deceived). He mentions: “My son, Abdul Rahman, had no inclination towards religious studies. I was greatly disturbed concerning him. Then Allah (al-Haqq) inspired me to depute his affair unto Him, which I did. From that night onwards he began of his own accord to engage in religious studies without my encouragement. He attained the sweetness of knowledge beginning that very night, and his understanding became greater than those who had begun studying years before him. Allah relieved me from the fatigue I had previously experienced.” May we learn to do as the Shaykh did, and may Allah bless us with a similarly beautiful outcome. Amin! IZS
