As To Egypt It is difficult to overstate my joy when Mubarak fell - TopicsExpress

As To Egypt It is difficult to overstate my joy when Mubarak fell two and a half year ago. The gallant people rose up and deposed this awful man in a couple of weeks. An astonishing feat. The future seemed so bright. Now that hope is in tatters, and I think one needs to look at this case carefully. I am old enough to remember dozens of these coups. With rare exceptions, military men who overthrow elected governments are assholes. They always say that they are patriots, that this is necessary to save democracy , etc. They are almost always lying, I believe. It may be true that President Morsi was less than great, but he was elected fairly and should not be purged in this way. The most instructive event of the past year was not Dr.Morsi’s fall, but the dissolution of the elected Parliament by the Constitutional Court. This man Mansour dissolved a Parliament in which 75% of the seats were won by Muslim candidates. The court cited a technical glitch of some sort, but I think that could have been finessed in some way. The problem was all those Muslims in the Parliament. Now Justice Mansour has his reward, the President of Egypt. Of course , he’s not a real President, but Mubarak wasn’t either. Picky Picky. I, like most of those who overthrew Mubarak,am a believer in secular government. ( Our problem here is these miserable right wing Christians, not Muslims ). But I am not an Egyptian, and I believe that people of Egypt have the right to elect a Muslim Government if that is their wish. Democracy is what it is. My heart goes out to those who want Egypt to be a free modern country, and believe that the military did this for them. I fear that they will learn that it wasn’t for them, but to reassert primacy for the military and their civilian stooges like Mansour. We’ll find out.
