As a Realtor, life can be pretty hectic. But regardless, Im a mom first! Making lunch for 3 kids can be daunting. One likes this, the other likes that. I started this system a year ago after much complaining of A SANDWICH AGAIN!. I had so many moms say it made life so much easier. A few things have changed, but overall - it still works amazing. The kids now make their own lunches. I encourage all moms (working or not - you still have the toughest job out there) to try it! Gives them a little more responsibility, makes them feel more independent and in control and lightens my already overloaded to-do list! After a grocery store shop, they now sit down and help make the portions! The numbers on the bins represent how many to take (example the meat & veggie bin is on my bottom shelf in the fridge, so they take one of each). I put multiple items in one bin to give them variety throughout the week. One day crackers the next goldfish. My 5 year old only takes 2 items as she only has morning snack in kindergarten. My 8 year old usually loads it all up and my 10 year old has started taking doubles of the meat and veggies. Growing boy... The rule has been added of whatever comes home uneaten is now your afternoon snack! No waste. Also, Ive come across this AMAZING tasting Superbutter at Costco (picture attached). It is a seed butter made from sunflower, sesame and flax seed. Love the minimal ingredients (except palm oil), but the kids love it as their peanut butter and honey sandwich if they want a sandwich, or in a container to dip their apples, rice crackers or celery in. So whats in the bins? Keeping in mind our school has a nut free policy. Bin 1 - popcorn, pretzels, 1/8 cup of dark chocolate chips, veggie straws (Ill mix it up with what they call junk food). Bin 2 - goldfish, rice or ritz crackers. Sometimes just a slice of bread to make their own sandwich at school (again, Ill mix them up but they dont have to have the same thing everyday). Bin 3 - no sugar added fruit to go, fruit & veggie source bars. Bin 4 - fruit cups and apple sauces (will do in-season fresh fruit most often, but good back up and with 3 kids liking all different fruit, this is my compromise) Bin 5 - cheese strings, babybell cheese an yogurt tubes. Again will mix it up with yoplait drinks and diced regular cheeses I have. Bin 6 - Meat & veggies. The hardest one as all three kids are not big meat eaters! Here I have turkey lunchmeat rolled up, turkey pepperettes (Costco). I will do hard boiled eggs or leftover diced chicken breasts from supper too! For veggies carrots, cucumbers and celery. Bin 7 - will be granola bars, banana muffins or cookies! *Cold Drink Thermos - water, milk or chocolate milk. Kids dont like juice and not a fan of the sugar in it either. ***In the winter, I will often make a bowl each of leftovers after supper and put it in the fridge. In the morning, they heat it up and put it in their thermos for a hot lunch. Things like meatballs and rice, perogies and sausage, spaghetti, lasagna or soup. Hope this helps, have fun, make it your own! Include the kids in the planning and see what they would like. Feels awesome to have them come home with an empty lunch bag, no waste and a happy full belly!
