As a child, I used to wait impatiently for winter - it would cover everythibg with its cold, dry beauty. Winter also brought all my relatives and cousins to our house, which served as a focus for people living scattered across five continents, and all of them obeyed the tacit agreement to meet yearly during the winter break. However, for such a large gathering, I remember all of them as remarkably quiet - every morning people would sit wrapped up in jackets and sweaters and shawls, a book in every hand. Uncles, aunts, cousins - all had a book in hand. I guess I picked up my reading craze from my family. A few days ago, I took my parents to my library. They spent hours there like children, leafing through books, novels and magazines. And yesterday, as I got up bleary eyed at 3 AM after finishing the final part of a 14 part series, I checked on my parents - there was a stack of Shivani and Munshi Premchand books on the table in their room. I fell asleep dreaming variously of castles and the Kumaon mountains and a cold, cold winter night where an old woman sat scraping leftovers after a gala dinner... ~~~ What have you been reading lately?
