As a graduate student/ young professional I try not to voice my opinion on social media regarding every single issue that arises, however...As I sat in a 6th grade classroom today in Southeast DC- filled entirely with young black boys, I saw a child raise his hand. He said to his teacher I want to know why they keep killing black men. The pure look of confusion, anger, and most importantly fear on his face was unbearable. I knew that was the last straw. His question/ statement struck a deep nerve within me. As future leaders we need to be at the forefront in speaking out against injustices. Being busy or in school is not an excuse to sit back and watch people of color losing their lives and not receiving the appropriate justice that should be offered to every human being. In the 1960s college students actively engaged in the struggle for civil rights (ie The Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC)). This tradition needs to continue as we are still plagued with some of the same despicable injustices. I believe that black lives matter and I will not remain silent. You can catch me in the library tonight studying for finals, as well as attending Howard Universitys The Value of Black Life in America Call to Action tonight at 6:30pm in the Blackburn Digital Auditorium.
