As a leader of people at work yesterday is a day I will never - TopicsExpress

As a leader of people at work yesterday is a day I will never forget. My role(along with my counterpart) is work is to lead, teach and develop our team of employees to do a job where you have to get up early, think on your feet, always be judged on your performance and is physically demanding while having to communicate well with customers. They are constantly pressured to be on time and do the job with perfection. What I have found over the years is that most people who are not successful at the job normally occurs due to influences outside of work. The lesson is dont always be quick to judge of work performance. Easy to say but sometimes difficult to do because when issues arise I am the one answering to them. Always find out how things happen and why before assuming you know. Yesterday we received a call from a mother of employee to tell us thank you in tears. For what? She said you saved my sons life by how you treated him when he had no one else to speak to. Right when he was ready to take his life you changed him from doing it and is now reaching out to us for help. Unknown to us, she had already lost a daughter to suicide so you can imagine what this would have done. The employee is going to move back home(another state) but the lesson is work is work and people are people. Work is important to me but its always about the people who make it happen. This mother wants drive over 3 hours just to meet us, have lunch and say thank you. All we did here was listen. This just makes me think how fragile people can be when the stress is adding up in peoples lives. Only reason I am putting this up here is to remind us all you never know how your words can change how people feel. You are only as good as your people. ;) Hope you all have a great day!
