As a rabid Big Red Machine fan back in the day, I am glued to this ESPN special about Pete Roses 25 years in exile from baseball. Tonight I will not argue my case that Rose should be voted into the Hall of Fame. Instead, I am laughingly recalling one of our long-ago trips to Atlanta to see the Braves vs. the Reds. As my daddy Thomas Bray and his friend Hardy Southern played pool in the basement of the Howard Johnson Motel near Fulton County Stadium, two little boys were whispering about them. Finally, one of them worked up his courage to ask my daddy, Are you Pete Rose? My daddy replied, Yep, and this is Johnny Bench, pointing to Hardy. I cant remember if Daddy ever told the boys they were joking. If not, those guys are now my age and probably have told countless people through the years that they once met Rose and Bench down in Atlanta.
