As a reader, I have never had a single review sway me away from a book. A plethora of bad reviews may bring it to question. As indie Authors, we need to get a grip. We put WAY to much stock in our books worth ( and our acceptance as a writer) based on reviews. How many books have you not read based on a review....before you became an author? One? two? None? As Indie authors, reviews are our most visible means of acknowledgement, so we take them to heart...but the purchasing public gives a rats-behind about them. How did you find your LAST book to read (again,as a reader, not an author)? A) A friend recommended a book to you. B) You clicked Through a link on a book purchasing website for the Others that read this also liked.... C) You were browsing shelves at a library, book store or used books store. D) You saw it in a major papers Best seller list or on a show that was interviewing the author. Those are the top three. OK, once you found a book that you may want to read, what determined if you would buy it? 1) the cover. (Big one) 2) the blurb (on the back or on the Amazon page) and #3)... the least contributing factor MIGHT be a cumulative browsing of a few reviews (which really only applies to B above). But, understand that the readers decision to purchase was 95% there before getting to #3 AND #3 is only a factor if they found your book using method B above. Additionally, there has to be a PILE of negative and well thought out reviews to drive the buyer away at that point. Why? Because he was driven there by the A,B,C and/or D above AND #1 and 2 where already fulfilled. The deciding factor was NOT the one or two 1 star reviews. Again, we get WAY to stressed out and focused on low star reviews. We need to focus on marketing and fan base building....and reviews do NOTHING toward that.
