As a responsible operator, TransAlta is the first company in Alberta to undertake decommissioning and reclamation for a coal-fired plant and surface mine of this scale. Today if you drive by the old Whitewood mine and Wabamun plant sites it’s hard to conceive that these industrial operations were there as the areas have been transformed. At the Whitewood Mine, the reclamation is complete, which included the planting of over 277,000 trees on the site since 2010. The next steps include working in conjunction with Parkland County, the Village of Wabamun development authorities and the community to develop an area plan. A variety of end-land uses will be explored for the area during the certification process, including agriculture, recreation, commercial and wildlife/wetland habitat.
