As a senior seeing everyone choose their colleges and their majors, I really cannot come to understand the logic behind a large majority of the people who choose engineering. This definitely doesnt pertain to everyone, and there are no specific people this is about, since its just a trend Ive noticed, yet what I dont understand is why all of these people choose to enter engineering now. After 4 years of high school where there were tons of options to explore the idea of engineering, why do they now decide to pursue it? Weve had advanced math and science courses, STEM classes ranging from computer science to engineering sciences, and of course our robotics team and our small (yet available) variety of engineering-related clubs, that many of these people have never bothered to involve themselves in. Of course I welcome everyone who wants to get into the field - its a great field, but its not something that you can just waltz into without preparation. Engineering is a serious field. Engineers change the world. And those of us who are serious about engineering are going to take this seriously. So when people who have spent near 0% of their high school career participating in these engineering-related activities announce that theyre going to become an engineer, I feel like theyre not serious about a very serious and important career, and I take it a bit personally. Not just for myself, but for all of those who actually have put in all of the hard work and effort for this significant aspect of our world. Like I said earlier - Im always happy to introduce people to the world of engineering. I enjoy the fact that you are interested in what I am also interested in. The only thing I cannot come to comprehend is why at this point in time? After all these years its been available to you? After all of the times I and countless others tried getting you involved? Why now? /rant/
