As a withdrawn and troubled youth, awkward and melancholy, I became captivated, obsessed, by the movies, the escapism of it all. I felt more comfortable, more at home, and more at peace while engaged in a film than I did anywhere else, especially fantasy and science fiction. Films that exercised the imagination and contrasted against the practical world, those filled with magic and otherworldly elements. Movies were place of sanctuary. For that short time I could be somewhere else, somewhere important, I wasnt alone, or I could cease to exist all together, and I was content. The more fantastic the film, the grander the escape, the further it would carry me, and I yearned to travel far.
