As a writer, Ive always been a huge fan of names, and I do believe that what you name your characters has a large impact not only on how people see them, but on who they can grow into. For instance, the lead guitarist and plot catalyst in The Music Book (Im still working on it, I swear) is named Beck after the great Jeff Beck. Their manager, a former punk drummer, is named Dave after Dave Grohl from The Foo Fighters and Nirvana. Once I get further into it, Ill probably have characters named after Metallica and The Clash pop up. Also, the bands name, Bleach, is Nirvanas first record. When reading a book or story, or even watching TV, pay attention to what the characters names. It isnt always the case, but occasionally the writer drops a hint about them, their history, or their eventual arc in the name. Remember, we dont name them for no reason.
