As a writer for hire, I am sometimes shocked and mystified when I send some writing off and the client comes back with a comment such as the text is full of mistakes. Talking to one of them yesterday, I realised that they run MS Word spell checker on the document and assume that all the red bits are mistakes rather than my considered overrule of the tool they trust so much. I can tell you some tales about that (mostly useful) tool. When I worked in the wine industry, it turned an oaky wine into one that was just okay. And someone having fun in a brasserie was suddenly doing it in a brassiere. Anyway, heres that old chestnut to illustrate the point: Eye halve a spelling chequer It came with my pea sea It plainly marques four my revue Miss steaks eye kin knot sea. Eye strike a key and type a word And weight four it two say Weather eye am wrong oar write It shows me strait a weigh. As soon as a mist ache is maid It nose bee fore two long And eye can put the error rite Its rare lea ever wrong.
