As an application developer of scalable enterprise level database solutions with over 24 years of development experience, I understand exactly where this professor is coming from. The professor should expect better from a senior level class. The ERD is the most basic of elements when programming. I no longer have to create one for most small to mid-sized projects, because its in my head as I code... If you cant grasp the foundation then how can you write stable applications. If the government hired people like these students to develop the healthcare.gov site, no wonder why it failed so miserably. The ERD results from analysis and assessment of the business need and model then outlines a proposed solution to PROPERLY manage data. When I completed my last course in Nursing Informatics, more than half the class didnt understand the concept of relational db design!? How they got a diploma I dont know. You defiantly cant be functional in a business environment and be so blatantly ignorant.
