As far as winter days go, this one is not sitting high on my list of favorites. There is just so much wrong with today, and since we live in a section of northwest Ohio where there are few, if any, trees, everything is amplified. Its cold, the wind is blowing at least 25 miles per hour, and the two or three inches of snow that fell in the night has been relocated. I believe the majority of it is piled around my house in huge, drifting, snow dunes that appear an ugly brownish-white from the top soil that has been buffed from nearby fields and mixed with the snow. And worst of all, the sun is shining! One salvation that keeps me from spending the day looking out the window and cursing my luck, are the dogs. Gabby Goo Goo and me were out early, and since the bean field behind the house is fairly barren, we done a little work. I set up a giant ball diamond for Goo and put her on the pitchers mound. She hasnt trained for a few days, so she handled well and was very attentive. Then we went over behind the garden shed and I tossed bumpers into her brush piles and across the frozen pond to the far bank. She done well finding them, and had a blast bouncing through the snow. Later, when Billy came out, we had another session that was more playful than serious, yet we still worked on some obedience and chased some bumpers. They sometimes seem work like bumper fetching is a team sport :) Theyll head out together, and if one dog finds their bumper, theyll go over and seemingly help the other look for their bumper, should they be having trouble locating it. This morning, one bumper sailed high and crashed down in the tall grass and deep snow on the other side of the pond. It disappeared under the snow like a winged rooster pheasant might, and it was all hands on deck for that one. The two Chessies tore the snow and grass apart looking for the errant dummy and after a bit little Gabby Goo Goo fished it out of a drift. They were pleased with themselves and Dad was cold, so we made our way back to the house for some breakfast. Now all is calm, and thanks to that sun, all is bright :)
