As far back as the American Revolutionary War, women have served in combat. Some even disguised themselves as men and served in leadership positions. In the long history of human conflict, warfare has been predominantly — but never exclusively — a realm of men. Frances Roche, a Boise resident who will turn 100 years old in December, served in a women’s company as a First Sergeant during World War II. Her transition into civilian life was pretty smooth, she said, when she took a job as a bank teller after her discharge. But the experience of women serving today is an entirely different ball game. In recent years — for the first time in the nation’s history — more women than ever are serving in front-line roles once only available to men. They’re at risk for all the same combat-related injuries that threaten their male counterparts, but also face unique challenges of their own..
