As flood hit people receive meagre compensation, coalition Govts credibility continues to be hit badly Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Nov 19: As the officials of Revenue department are busy in handing over cheques to the flood affected people across Kashmir the credibility of Omar Abdullah led coalition government in the state is taking a serious hit with every passing day. The people who have been badly affected by flood have accused the state government of adding insult to their injury by providing them peanuts through the medium of compensation cheques. Most of the people have raised revolt against the people at helm and resolved to root them out of power as elections are round the corner. There is a serious lacuna as far as distribution of relief is concerned. The affected people are being paid meagre amount for their huge losses suffered during the flood. Owners of partially damaged houses are given Rs. 3,800 as relief amount while as this amount is Rs. 12,650 for those whose houses were severely damaged. People whose houses were damaged fully and are un-safe were paid Rs. 75,000, said Mehraj-ud-din, a resident of Pampore. Mehraj said the amount is too meagre given the devastation caused by flood in their area and the other affected areas. He alleged that it took more than two months for the state government to come out of shell and provide peanuts to the flood affected people. My house got completely damaged in the flood and paid more than one lakh as labour charges for clearing the rubble of my damaged house. In lieu of it I received a cheque of Rs. 75,000 and as such there was loss of more than Rs. 25,000. Isnt it a cruel joke with people like me who have lost everything in this natures fury, said Farooq Ahmad, a resident of Karan Nagar. Farooq said that it may take ages together for the state government to pay the adequate compensation amount to the flood affected people. He said that as the winter has already set in people living in flood hit houses are up against many odds since they had to shift to the upper stories where the cold is more. On the other side the flood affected people are taking on the revenue officials like the Patwaris (Land Record Assistants) and blame them for the disbursal of meagre compensation cheques. This is despite the fact that these revenue officials have nothing to do as far as calculation of the relief amount for flood affected people is concerned. There is tremendous work load on us and we are literally working as coolies these days, but still then the people dont understand our problem. It is the engineer from the R & B department who classifies the extent of damage done to houses due to flood. The relief amount is sanctioned according to his report and we dont have any role in this whole process, said a group of Patwaris while sharing their views with Early Times. It would be in place to mention here that the High Court has asked the state government to come out details about the Rs. 1,000 crores that lies with them on account of State Disaster Fund. The High Court has time and again also expressed dissatisfaction over the slackness in distributing relief for flood affected people.
