As i was checking in to my hotel I realized that Priceline had messed up my reservation in Charleston. The very nice lady at the hotel informed me there were just a couple rooms left. The problem was that I had to cancel my wrong reservation with Priceline before she could book me a room. She nicely handed me the 800 number to call. As I stepped to the side to make my call I noticed a line had formed behind me. As I dialed the number and waited for an answer I overheard her tell the next gentleman in line that there were no rooms in Charleston, everything is booked and I only have a couple rooms left. She went on to tell him that her computer had just crashed and she couldnt check anyone in or look for a room for anyone. She informed him that it could take up to an hour to reboot it. Several people walked out the door. But I stood there with the phone to my ear. She told the story several times before most everyone left. They all gave up. But not I. I went through the motions to cancel my Priceline reservation and took a seat. I figured no rooms available anywhere else and Im first in line, Ill just wait. Me and two others and we quickly became buddies as we sat waiting for this poor woman to try to fix her computer system. We learned all about each others lives and families. Its like we knew each other forever. After about 30 minutes an older gentleman walked in the front door of the hotel. He had obviously been trying to find a room also and was not happy that everyone was booked. He spoke with a demanding voice and informed everyone within a mile radius that HE needed a room. This sweet woman, as she had done several times, informed him of her unfortunate circumstances. She also pointed to us and said they are waiting. He obviously didnt like her answer and huffed something about us not standing in line. She was consistent. She smiled and handled him with grace. Me, on the other hand, I leaned over and whispered to my new best friends heres the deal, I dont wanna go gangster here but if that man tries to shove his way into taking our rooms I will. Both of my friends assured me they had my back. It was then that I guess The Lord spoke to me. First, he convicted me that going gangster on anyone is not what Jesus would do nor would he even like the threat of me going gangster. Second, He spoke to me and gave me he brilliant idea to get on my cell and try to find a room. So I began googling... I found a hotel with vacancies and told my buddies it was just a few miles down the road. We made a plan. They would sit there, keep our place in line and I would go scout us a hotel. We all swapped names and cell numbers and off I went. I was only a few miles down the road when my new best friend Susan called me. Hey Martie, its Susan at the hotel, the computers up and our rooms are ready. Ok thanks. Do they need my credit card to hold the room? I asked. No Im using mine to hold it for you. I got your back friend. Now honestly... I know it was like we were family but how many people would actually take the time to do that for a complete stranger? Really. Goodness abounds.
