As kids, I do not remember seeing many foreign breed dogs here in India. An occasional spits or a German shepherd dog...maybe a Dachshound...life was simple then. People did not care about spending money on buying animals to use as ‘symbols of status’...the old Ambassador car was a luxury...we slept outside during summer to escape the heat....life has changed much...in many ways, it has benefitted us....but some have had to pay for our change in lifestyle...the old Ambassador has been replaced with fast cars ....air conditioners replaced the fresh air outside...and an expensive, imported breed dog adorns many a home..... The demand for imported breeds has suddenly increased ten fold, over the past 8 to 10 years. Companion animals are being bought from pet stores,( that seem to be cropping up almost everywhere...) online...and suddenly dog breeding has become a lucrative business. We have forgotten our very own Indian Native dog and the many awesome breeds that have existed here in our country...most Indians have never heard of names like ‘Rajapalayam hound’ or ‘Chippiparai’...or Mudhol hound...but they do know ‘Labra’ or ‘Alsatian’ or ‘Pamerian’.... Now we have breeds like Great Danes and St.Bernards being bred almost anywhere...the Indian climate is pure is torture for them. Pugs are common since Hutch phones used them for promotion....EVERYone wanted a pug....breeders went crazy, trying to keep up with the market demand... It is easy to make money off dogs and cats...get a male and female...mate them and put in an advertisement in the news paper...all gone in about a week....people who buy don’t care aboutregistration or papers...all they want is a dog that looks just like the one they saw in the ‘Phone waala add)...the pup comes home...begins doing what all dogs naturally do, peeing on the carpet...chewing shoes..needing to be walked....and after a while it becomes too much trouble...the dog is neglected...often falls ill...treatment is a hassle, so ...picked up and dumped...maybe just anywhere or if the baby is lucky...outside a shelter... If you really need to have a dog, ADOPT one...pick up a stray...like we used to do years ago...BUYING a dog was unheard of...!! Greedy people are cashing in on our stupidity...wake up before it is too late...the way the dog population is growing, we are lucky to not have ‘Kill Shelters’....YET. ADOPT....SPAY...NEUTER....aid and facilitate ABC (Animal Birth Control) programs run by municipalities and other organizations.
