As long as Im venting-this will crack you up. A guy phoned me, let’s call him “Dave”. Dave tells me his paper in Tahlequah wants to run my travel columns. If I could help them out by buying a small ad to go along with the articles, that would be great. He said “we’ll be gentle with you, it will cost about $99 a month”. He wanted to come to my agency, but something in my gut said “don’t”, so I met him at Braums in Eufaula yesterday morning. He showed me their newspaper, and said they were prepared to give me the entire back page, featuring my travel article and my full color pictures. They would fill the lower half of the page with any ad I’d like to run. All for only $1999 for 7 weeks! What? What happened to $99 a month? I literally said “no way”! He said “let me call the owner” and after a very brief discussion he said “that’s what I thought, the owner said he will give you everything we mentioned for $1999 for the full year. As a matter of fact, since this is such a great deal, you’ll need to write me a check for it right now”. I said “I didn’t even bring a check book” and he asked if we could go by my bank and make a cash withdrawal. I was stunned. “Not no, h*** no”. My thought was this, if you could have given it to me for 12 months at $1999, why did you try to get me to pay $1999 for 7 weeks? You tried to price rape me, then expect me to sign up and do business with you? Are you on crack? At The Joy of Travel we give you our very best price the first shot out of the gun. If you say you can’t afford it, we find a different resort, flights, whatever, but we cannot give you a lower price BECAUSE WE ALREADY GAVE YOU OUR VERY BEST PRICE. I do not understand businesses who try to price-rape their customers. Here at The Joy of Travel, your virtue will remain intact, because we will always give you the best deal we can give you. Always. You have my word on it. Dave, put that in your pipe and smoke it!
