As many AYSO Regions begin their season, here is an enlightening story from a volunteer. Enjoy! My three boys have been involved in AYSO since they were first eligible to play. At first it was a struggle where they would run around like a school of fish following the ball. No offense, no defense, just a group of kids following around a little ball. A year or two later, it was all about the best player on the team. That was the guy that got the ball, scored the goals and got the glory. Interestingly enough, these were the teams that never went on to win the championship or go on to Area playoffs. As the boys got older, the team aspect of the sport came in to play. Solid defense and offense with key positions for the kids to play. As my oldest went up to U-14, it all came together, the hard practices, team building exercises and sheer hard work. The team had a couple of stellar players, but the coach insisted on building a true team. Oftentimes, he would rest the star players and put everyone else on the pitch, just to see how his team approach would work. His team went on to win the championship for our Region and went deep into the playoffs, where they finally lost to a team that was better than them. My oldest decided not to play soccer the next year, opting for swim team instead. However, the lessons he had learned about team building have stayed with him to this day. The beauty of team sports carries on into life, in the workplace and at home. Success on the soccer pitch will lead to success in life; at least thats what one AYSO parent thinks! :-)
