As many folks now know, this year I am conducting the 1000 SPECIES challenge! The goal is to observe 1000 species of organisms within a geographical area (Ive chosen DuPage county) and to document them! I have decided to utilize ebird, project noah and ebutterfly! These three sites are great for sharing observations and helping to build strong citizen science data! By the end of 2015, I should be able to identify 1000 different organisms including birds, mammals, herps, fish, insects and plants! This will help me be well on my way to learning about the natural flora and fauna of the area in which I live! Still, there are some friends (especially my age) who question why I am taking this challenge. My best comparison is this: Remember when we were kids and we used to play Pokemon, guiding our character across Kanto catching Pokemon and filling up our Pokedex? This is a real life version of that! Instead of being a Pokemon Master I will be well on my way to becoming an all encompassing naturalist, and not just a bird brain! Im excited to see everything and to inundate your news feeds with photos! As I learn, I hope everyone can pick up an interesting fact or two about the wildlife that they live with! So Ill be sure to add some fun facts! Thanks for reading!
