As many of us volunteer for Angels Night and Neighborhood Watch I - TopicsExpress

As many of us volunteer for Angels Night and Neighborhood Watch I want to share a funny story about a Devils Night I remember when I was 10 years old and living in Lafollette Tennessee. If you knew my Grandpa you will probably find it humorous. On the West side of Lafollette back in the 70s the teenage boys loved having fun on Devils Night. Most of their fun was harmless...Egg throwing fights, tee peeing houses and trees and they especially loved setting up big bon fires in the streets. We lived off an area known as the 5 point. It was called 5 point because 5 separate roads all met at one point in our neighborhood. Every Devils Night the teenage boys in our neighborhood would start a huge fire in the middle of the 5 point and block traffic coming in and out of the neighborhood. In our yard underneath our camper we stored several cords of firewood for our fireplace. As we got off the bus from school that day one of my buddies Tim White told me he heard his older brothers and their friends saying they were going to steal our firewood that night to build the fires at the 5 point. I of course ran home and told my Grandpa. My Grandpa laughed when I told him and said No those sobs aint! Later that night around 930pm I think. I was taking a shower and getting ready for bed when I heard the sounds of a fence clinking. We had a 6 foot fence on the east side of our yard and I could hear the teenage boys climbing over the fence and jumping down to come and try and steal our wood. I turned off the bathroom light and opened the window and sat still and listened. Now on the West side of Lafollette when you get 15-20 feet off the streets and away from the street lights it is pitch black. I didnt hear anything for a couple of minutes and then I heard a horrific scream. Mr Petrees got a shot gun!!! RUN!!! Then I heard several screams and the sounds of boys climbing a 6 foot fence as fast as they could and hitting the ground and running. I ran outside to see what my Grandpa was doing and found him and our neighbor Pete Sharp sitting in lawn chairs directly in front of our cords of wood. Pete and my Grandpa were laughing so hard I thought they would cry Finally they stopped laughing and Pete told me how him and my Grandpa had sat down in front of the wood and waited for the boys to come over the fence. Once the boys got close one of them turned on a flashlight and pointed the light toward the wood piles. What they saw was my Grandpa with a gun pointed right at them!!! It was only a pellet gun and he would have never shot at them but they sure thought it was a shot gun. I tell this story to my kids every Halloween and we all laugh. One of my favorite stories about my Grandpa. Sorry it was so long. Missing my Grandpa again!!!
