As many of you know, I have been one of those stop-being-hysterical-about-Ebola types. I still am. (Heading into NYC in an hour to see a movie!) That said, I do not understand the uproar in some corners about quarantining medical professionals who are returning from having treated Ebola victims. We very apparently have had instances of people who took all the precautions while treating Ebola victims and yet still contracted the disease. And while I honestly and truly respect their care and commitment to treating the disease in Africa, it seems odd that same care and commitment doesnt extend to preventing the spread of the disease back home. If someone has spent a month or two in the tragic conditions around treatment centers in Africa, is it really so devastating to ask people to spend 21 days hanging out in quarantine here in the US? That just strikes me as a relatively small inconvenience compared to 1) the greater unpleasantness these volunteers experience in Africa, and 2) the terrible possibility of infecting others. I dont think you can get it from a handshake or bowling ball, but that doesnt mean it makes sense to send people with a serious chance of contracting the disease back into medical positions within busy medical centers around people with compromised immune systems in our most densely populated cities. So, feel free to tell me where this opinion is incorrect. Ive doled out some criticism to those who spread misinformation and over-react to the facts, so I am fine with you telling me Im doing the same! dallasnews/ebola/headlines/20141025-uta-grad-isolated-at-new-jersey-hospital-as-part-of-ebola-quarantine.ece
