As many of you know I was very active in sports growing up in Flagstaff. And, sport drives the businesses that I have been building for the last 20 years. I think sports is one of the most effective ways to get people with different backgrounds to work together and to see past skin color and other differences. Anyone that has watched or read about the rivalry and friendship of Magic Johnson and Larry Bird have witnessed firsthand the bonding power of sports. Growing up I was a big Lakers fan and I loved Magic Johnson because of his team play. I really couldnt stand Larry Bird, because the dude and his team were the perpetual nemesis of the Lakers. However, I always respected Birds team play- despite him dashing many hopes for us old Lakers fans. More recently, I have read about and studied Magics and Birds very successful business careers- Magic in commercial real estate development, and Bird in professional basketball management. Winners on the competitive sports field are better prepared for winning in business and life, which is why I try to support our student athletes here at NAU. Watching these two legends interact gives me hope that we can all somehow learn to get along some day.
