As many of you will be aware from local publicity, YES Brora and - TopicsExpress

As many of you will be aware from local publicity, YES Brora and District have organised a Referendum Question Time debate for this coming Thursday, 4 September. We organised a balance of speakers from both sides of the debate in order to give local people an opportunity to quiz the experts (particularly useful for those of you still undecided). Whilst organised by YES supporters this was always intended to give the views from both YES and NO. However, last night we received news from Better Together saying that they were now withdrawing their speakers from the event as ‘we can’t risk our speakers attending an event in a hostile environment’. It is of course up to them if they do not wish their representatives to speak at a public event however it leaves the debate in somewhat of a debacle!!! This withdrawal of speakers by the unionists at the last minute is unfortunately a pattern which is currently being repeated across Scotland and as a result many planned meetings have had to be cancelled. At the time of posting, we now only have Cllr Deirdre Mackay representing NO but she may wish to now step down rather than be the sole NO speaker (which we would fully respect and understand if she did). We do hope though that she will still come along to the event as she is the local councillor and contribute to the evening. After much consideration, YES Brora and District have decided to go ahead despite this blow struck by NO. SO, as it presently stands it looks as though our debate is fast becoming instead, an informative evening with speakers from the YES side of the debate unless we can find any willing speakers from the NO side to come along at this late date. Any updates, we will keep you all informed and we very much hope you will still come along for a lively evening of questions and answers!
