As many of you will know last year my husband and I started an activity club for children with Autism and their families. The focus is to encourage social and verbal communication skills by finding the spark that will help the child connect with our world. Children and the families who join the club find it very hard to engage in ‘normal’ activities at the weekends, as the children have severe sensory issues which thereby impact upon the family as a whole and most feel isolated and lonely. We have created an understanding safe place where they can have fun and socialise with other children and families. Each week there is a different theme to inspire them and we build on life skills such as cooking, reading and writing. We have a whole range of activities on offer and it has been going very well. So well in fact that we are turning it into a charity and looking at it as a long term project.
