As most of you know our son, Carter, was diagnosed with T1D on December 4, 2012 at 2 1/2 years old. I should have started this on November 1, but better late then never. Since it is Diabetes Awareness Month, I will be posting a fact about Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) everyday for the month. 1. Type 1 diabetics can eat anything. All in moderation. 2. You can not grow out of T1D. 3. T1D IS different from Type 2 Diabetes. 4. Type 1 diabetics will be insulin dependent for the rest of their lives. 5. There is no explanation for why a person develops T1D. 6. T1D is genetic. 7. Type 1 diabetics have to count every carbohydrate they eat. This means they must weigh and measure everything. 8. Type 1 diabetics check their blood glucose levels at least 4 times a day, but most check it many more times than that. 9. Type 1 diabetics didnt develop diabetes because they ate to much sugar. 10. Type 1 diabetics can still participate in sports. Examples: Jay Cutler, QB for the Chicago Bears. And Ryan Reed, NASCAR driver in the Nationwide Series. 11. T1D is a autoimmune disease. 12. T1D can be life threatening.
