As most of you know, when I went to Cuba, I had the time of my life. I just love the people there! We went to the school and brought some really great things (special thanks to Neila and Lana) The school was very happy to receive all the stuff we brought and it warmed my heart to be able to do that. Theres no way to describe the feeling about giving someone something and knowing that the other person knows that youre not expecting anything in return and that youre only trying to help. It meant so much to me. Cubans are such wonderful people. When I asked the director of the school what she would like us to bring next year, she said she was very happy with what she received this time and wouldnt tell us what they wanted. I asked what they needed and she said a stapler. There are 28 teachers and I would like to be able to bring each one a stapler. Id like to take stapleless staplers so they wouldnt ever have to worry about running out of staples. So I put that on my list when I left. She talked about all the great things we brought - like the red pens and how the teachers will all have some to correct papers with, and mentioned how happy the kids would be with the crayons and coloring pencils we brought. She said some kids in grade 3 and 4 have never used coloring pencils or crayons. As you know, my son Brycen is an art student in university. If he hadnt of been able to use crayons and coloring pencils as a kid, he wouldnt be the person he is today. Something as small as a pack of coloring pencils and crayons would have changed the entire course of his life (since he wants to be an art teacher) The fact that some kids have never used any before really touched me and I need to do something about it. There are 478 kids at the school this year (preschool to grade 6) and I want to be able to bring each kid a pack of crayons and a package of coloring pencils. This may not seem like a huge thing but it is to me since art and kids having the tools to be imaginative is near and dear to my heart. So my goal is to have 500 packages of each (in case school enrolment goes up next year) so they have the same ability to explore childhood as the rest of us - most of us take these small things for granted. Were going back next year so I want to start gathering up stuff for my trip now since its a lot (if were not able to make it down next year, well ship it there) This cause is near and dear to my heart. Im creating a facebook group - prob called Colors for Cuba. If youre interested in donating a box of crayons, coloring pencils or some change, please let me know. We can change lives together. Please let me know if youre interested in being part of this wonderful group.
