As much as people around the world make fun of us Kentuckians, saying we are backward, toothless, stupid and poor, we couldnt be more rich. I couldnt be more proud of my Appalacian heritage and wouldnt change it for anything. We went to church every single Sunday, you did NOT miss. My Daddy was born of a mid wife up straight creek on a dirt floor and we arent even sure of everyones birthdays born up there. How could you not be proud of such hard work, family and survival? Id say the mountain people arent stupid. Think some city person from a big city would survive that and even thrive? Im very proud of where I come from and of my roots. Make fun of my voice, call me heartless that I can shoot and eat an animal, call me a redneck....its a compliment to me. I grew up eating the freshest food in the summer and healthy, canned food in the winter. There were times when we didnt have the things others had, but we never went hungry because we had a deep freeze full of freshly killed venison and a closet full of freshly canned veggies. My Mother worked HARD to make sure we were stocked up for the winter, canning and slaving over boiling water and piping hot mason jars. Daddy worked hard in the coal mines and as a Police Officer and painter to provide us a nice home. Even burn coal in your fire place and hang up a blanket on the livin room door to keep that one room warm and the whole family stays in that one warm room? Dread having to pee because its so cold in the other rooms so you just hold it? If you havent, it really brings the family closer. It made me who I am today and I wouldnt have it any other way.
