As my 25th Un-Birthday approaches on Monday (those closest to me know what the unbirthday means, the rest need only know it marks a sharp divide between two lives I live) I woke remembering a dream I had near an unbirthday many years ago. Standing on a wide savannah with gently undulating hills, I felt the hot sun baking and could see the heat radiating from the ground with its wavy distortion. Far in the distance I saw a Big Cat, larger than any lion should be. He noticed me just as I noticed him and paused, cocked his head to look at me and tensed. Panic began to set in and I was paralyzed, rooted to the spot and trying desperately to not be noticed. My brain began firing on overdrive and I searched myself for some resource to meet this danger. As if the grasses had wound their way round my legs I could not budge an inch. The Great Cat sprang towards me, running at a lope. I screamed inside my mind but could not utter a word. I shouted frantically at my self to RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN! The Cat was nearing me and my terror reached a fever pitch. At the last moment a gentle voice (my own, but some how separate from the screams) said PEACE, and with that my body unlocked and I simply sat down. Prepared in whole to feed the Cat and die. In a leap and a halt that stirred the dust the ravenous Cat stopped, his sabered teeth inches from my face and licked me, moving from one side of my face to the other. He purred a rumble that reverberated in my chest and the ground beneath me, and curled around me to rest in the noonday sun. My Death has been my greatest teacher. Aho
