As of 22/05/2013, the Indian Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC) has criminalized carrying Indian currency into India. The new law stipulates the following: Foreign visitors are strictly prohibited from bringing Indian currency (IR) into India. Indian Nationals are allowed to bring cash of up to IR 7,500/-into India. All those travelling to India are required to declare foreign currencies brought into India, as follows: a) Where the total value of cash exceeds USD 5,000 b) Where the total value of cash and other modes of financial exchange (e.g. traveller cheques) is equal to or exceeds USD 10,000
