As part of David Cameron’s £50m scheme for the NHS, doctor’s surgeries are to offer out-of-hours appointments and Skype check-ups, as well as receiving prescriptions electronically and booking appointments online. More surgeries are expected to offer appointments seven days a week, for 12 hours a day. This scheme is to reduce the amount of people being unable to get an appointment with their local GP and therefore inundating A&E departments with non-emergency ailments, putting staff under undue pressure. Although 1 in 10 surgeries are to offer this new initiative on a trial basis, there have been concerns raised over the majority of patients who will still struggle to obtain an appointment, as the government have removed a requirement for patients to be seen in 48 hours.
