As part of initiatives to address inadequate skilled manpower in the country, the Industrial Skill Training Centre of the Industrial Training Fund has commenced plans to resuscitate its one-year vocational training programme. In a statement on Tuesday, the organisation stated that the modules for the programme had been carefully selected to address acquisition of necessary knowledge, in order to enable participants to establish their businesses after the training. According to the statement, the Deputy Director/Training Manager of the ISTC, Mr. Olasupo Abimbola, said the training programme would also allow the participants to become more employable, choose and follow a career path in the industrial and governmental sectors of the economy. The deputy director added that over two million youths would be trained annually under the scheme’s various vocational training initiatives, including its quarterly modular training programme. Abimbola explained that over two million youths would be trained annually under the scheme, adding that applications were already being received from interested and suitably qualified candidates from various parts of the country. The long-term vocational training programme, Abimbola pointed, will lead to the award of ITF/ISTC Certificate of Competence (COC) in chosen trade areas, that include computer hardware maintenance and repairs, computer programming and application, electronics and computer networking and mechanical machining and maintenance. He was quoted as saying, “ITF certificated trainees are well sought after by both local and international employers,” adding that the centre would blend its curriculum with life-long skills such as safety and health. Other trade areas of training that will lead to the Certificate of Competence award, according to the ISTC training manager, are in foundry works, autotronics/auto mechanics works, electrical installation and maintenance at domestic and industrial levels, industrial automation technology, welding and fabrication work and refrigeration and air-conditioning works.
