As part of its mission to eliminate hunger in the United States, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as the Food Stamp Program and run by the USDA, helps fund employment and training programs that prepare people to find employment and become self-sufficient. Yesterday, USDA Under Secretary Kevin Concannon visited St. Francis House to learn more about our award-winning Sullivan Family Moving Ahead Program (MAP). Under Secretary Concannon listened intently as MAP Manager Joe Texeira and Employment Services Coordinator Nicholi McLaughlin described the 14-week program, which provides housing, a stipend, and teaches vital employment and life skills that help students overcome significant barriers – including histories of homelessness and substance abuse. MAP is so effective at preparing students for the work force that in 2013, 66% of graduates had a job by graduation. Toward the end of his visit, Mr. Concannon thanked our staff and noted that he has seen many employment programs in the past year, but “there are very few programs like this.”
