As part of the Lord Mayor of Bradfords Appeal and to raise funds for his two chosen charities (Marie Curie and Make it Happen), a Dragon Boat Festival is to be held in Roberts Park, on the River Aire on Saturday 9th May 2015. Details are: Up to 40 teams maximum are required. Each team will consist of 17 individuals (16 paddlers and 1 drummer). Individuals need no experience. Coaching and all the necessaries are all provided as part of the occasion by the UKs leading professional provider. Teams can be made up of ages 12 and upwards and any gender. - It is this aspect that make the activity so much fun as it is fully inclusive and provides a level playing field for what is a fun, enjoyable and competitive occasion for all. The boats themselves are 12 metres in length and very stable. They have a drummer at one end, a helms-person who steers at the other and are decorated to look like the original dragon boats from Asia; complete with dragons head and tail. Paddlers sit side by side on benches. Each paddler is provided with coaching, both on and off the water. The individual are provided with personal buoyancy aids for in the boats and a paddle to use. Racing on the River Aire, the race distance will be approx 200mtrs. Teams will race in a 3 boat race per heat. There will be 3 race minimum per team, with the fastest teams going to a Grand Final. A trophy and medals will be awarded to the Winners of the competition, whilst the 2nd and 3rd place teams will be awarded a trophy. Prizes will also be awarded to those who raise the most funds for the Lord Mayors Appeal. The Festival in Roberts Park is a family occasion and will see many other attractions on site that will appeal to all. Those teams registered for the festival by the 20th January 2015 will be mentioned to the media on this day and will also have an opportunity to have their photo taken with the Lord Mayor and the boats. The City Parks Big Screen will also be used to display details, as will the Website and Social Media sites that have been set up for the occasion. This day will also see the Lord Mayors challenge; Can you set the longest distance in one minute??? Excellent prizes to be awarded to the best U18s girl and boy, plus over 18s man and female categories. For the spectators wishing to enjoy the Festival in Robert Parks, please come along and admission for Festival is free and everyone is invited to enjoy what is a fun and wonderful experience.
