As posted so eloquently by Dean Shuey. "IPCC report is out - Time to act on climate change The IPCC (intergovernmental panel on climate change) report is out. It is calm and understated, couched in the language of scientists using probabilities, but the conclusions are clear - climate change is real, the consequences will be bad, it is to a large part caused by human generated activity, the consequences even if we act now will be with us for a long time, and the longer action is delayed the larger the consequences. There is a 36 page summary report for policy makers which has colored boxes with the key messages. For true climate wonks the long report will provide hundreds of pages of documentation. The message is clear - we need to decrease our carbon footprint. The problem is so large that sometimes it causes feelings of hopelessness and this leads to inaction. Obviously political work will be needed on a big scale. But there are personal things we can all do, that make a difference. Changes in how we travel, how we manage our homes, and how we eat, and may even include purchasing carbon offsets. Yes, these changes might be mildly inconvenient but they will not destroy our comfortable lifestyles and will actually save you money and allow you to do more of what you like. A good source that I have come across for some ideas for individual action is: shrinkthatfootprint/ They have a short free book that has some ideas in an easy to digest form. Sorry for the long post. It is only about the future of the planet."
