As promised, here is my spin on Drill. I wrote these statements and put them in picture frames outside the Drill Instructor office in the hallway so the Chiefs, Officers and Candidates could see the purpose and value of drill. I was inspired to write these thoughts down on paper for my silent rebuke at the changing of the guard mentality. The Chiefs and Officers saw no value, wanted to have all those hours spent on drill to be used instead for more classroom indoctrination into the finer things of being an officer like……………....hell I dont know, they never said what element of academia all your candidates were supposedly missing out on. There was something like 56 hours of drill on the schedule, and of course another 56 hours of unscheduled drill that we squeezed in. They wanted to reduce the drill hours to some asinine number like 16 hours. It eventually shrunk dramatically in 2007 when they moved north to Newport RI. A few months prior to the move up north the drill evaluation was reduced to only consist of standing formation movements. No marching.
