As promised the private presentation of the official Report was done on Tuesday July 30th, 2013 and here now is the Official Report for Public Viewing Seven Curry 2013…”Overcoming Challenges, Continuing Progress” Annotations, Analysis and Statistics …by Parmanand Persaud With the Blessings of Lord Shiva Seven 2013 will be memorised as the greatest fund raising activity in our Mandir’s history. Seven Curry Day food and sweet meat sales 2013 was officially launched on the 13th day of June, 2013 and it is the 9th successive food sale dating back to 2005. Over the years Seven Curry Day Food Sales has been the primary and ONLY fund raiser which is undertaken to garner funds for the development trust of our Mandir facilities and the sustenance of this non profit, humble organisation. Personally this is the tenth successive fund raising activity which I have coordinated, the first being a Fun Day and Culture Show held in August, 2004 at the Mon Repos Cricket Ground. I fondly remembered the older ladies and gentlemen of our mandir in 2004 fully supported a then teenager in the planning and execution of that activity. I also recall that many Seven Curry Day Sales were carried out under harsh physical conditions. Our Mandir facilities were a mess and that’s an understatement. We had no wash-bay so we substituted by using a thin plyboard which was often slippery. There was no drainage; water drained via gravity through the foundation of the back shed from south to north or across the mandir compound. This often left an awful stench. Water convenience was nonexistent basically; we struggle with one black tank water, which logically ran out in a short space of time. The gentlemen would have to resort to fetching water from neighbours to complete our tasks. I cannot forget my father, Panditji, who in a jiffy returned to his teenage days and with use of a bicycle he raided all vegetable shops for vegetables for us to cook again as food ran out during the second Seven Curry Sales in 2006. Our refrigerator felt the brunt of Pandit’s mission. The hard work, commitment and drive of these individuals have brought us to a stage that most of those struggles are no more; those endeavours have ensured that our Mandir is now fitted with the necessary facilities to ensure that work can be done under better circumstances. But a word of caution, they are still many challenges that confront us and our work is not by any means over. Our work is tedious as we have inherited a Mandir which was in the most primitive of conditions in the area of infrastructure. The works that we have been doing since 2007 may not be glaring to the public’s eye. Those passing on the road see an old dilapidated Wooden Mandir and it is fact, but what they don’t see is the improvement which has started from the foundation level and I confidently can say, that the foundation is set. We at the Mon Repos Shiv Mandir have done well; don’t ever feel otherwise, we are a group of people who are not extravagant and we demonstrated a trait that our fore-parents have brought with them and that is we are probably one of the few Mandir that operates strictly on volunteerism. Everyone who helps or does something is a volunteer and in this modern era we should be proud of this attribute. This is the foundation upon which Seven Curry 2013 is premised upon. Deliverables Seven Curry fund raising drives the infrastructure works of the Mon Repos Shiv Mandir. The funds acquired are use to facilitate works that are much needed. During Seven Curry 2012 the stage was set to start the construction of the Kitchen Facility. After a successful Seven Curry 2012 we were able to do the following works: Kitchen Project: Casting of Two remaining sections of the mandir compound, Installing of Fire Sides (5), Installing of Pipes (One Length 2 inches Pressure Pipe to drain the Shiv Mandir, Two 6 inches Pressure Pipes placed across the Main Road, Installing Concrete drain at the northern side of the Mandirs’ Compound and fixing of the Northern side fence and the creation of a back gateway/vehicle access point. The kitchen roof was completed in November, 2012 along with the instillation of pipe fixtures for water inlet and storage. The Total cost of works = $762,617 which includes the funds from Seven Curry 2012 and Navratri Donations of October 2012. After Navratri April 2013 the following works were additionally done at a cost of $122,012 which includes material and labour Cost. Installation of Two Additional Fire Sides. (Total of Seven Firesides) Casting of Fire side Tops Construction of Utensil Room (Not totally Completed) Installing of Rice Straining Area and mini wash-bay. Why Seven Curry 2013 Seven Curry at this moment remains the most feasible fund raising option based on the resources at our disposal at the, Mon Repos Shiv Mandir, as was detailed in the S.W.O.T analysis of 2012. See Seven Curry Report 2012. As you, the members are aware, our Kitchen facility is not fully to point where we need it to be and as such we have undertaken this 9th annual Seven Curry and Sweet Meat Fund Raiser. What is been done and what is to be done are two contrasts that are usually misunderstood. I do hope that you can picture mentally and through the given facts, along with the physical evidence understand what our mission is and what we want our end result to be. I hereby present to you the events of Seven Curry 2013 Promotion The promotion of Seven Curry 2013 was not different from last year, as banners were placed at our trusted locations; Narvin Water Shop, Mon Repos Public Road, Aunty Baby Snackette situated in the vicinity of Melsha Road Mon Repos, Raymond residence, first entrance block 8 Mon Repos and at the Mandir’s Compound. Promotional CDs were distributed, along with weekly updates and promotion during Mandir service on Thursdays and Sundays. Children were given one complimentary ticket and two bottles of Smalta each for correctly answering questions which hyped up the Food Sale. The only difference is that Seven Curry 2013 was promoted much earlier than previous years. It can be credited to alliances forged over the years with the ticket printers, sign artist and Disc Jockey. Within a few days these roll off items (Tickets, Banners and CDs) were developed promptly for the start of this our main fund raising activity. The respond to our annual Seven Curry was awesome, as the youths would say nowadays. We were able to sell out all our tickets with two weeks remaining for Seven Curry 2013. Tickets Sales A mixture of youths and elders marched forward in one direction to ensure that we sell as much tickets as possible and they have succeeded with admiration. A total of fifteen persons like clockwork would assembly promptly at 4:30pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays as different sections of Mon Repos, Triumph and Good Hope were targeted to ensure ticket sales. All excepting Teacher Diane, Aunty Indira and Aunty Laleeta were first time ticket sellers but I don’t need to say how well they have done the facts are there to show the great effort and work they have accomplished. Ticket Sellers Amount Sold Aunty Laleeta 150 Aunty Rita 125 Aunty Indira 100 Shivannie 100 Radha 50 Annie 50 Diane 50 Arti Persaud 25 Sumit 150 Satesh 125 Ravie 25 Uncle Miakoo 25 Special Order 25 Jasmine, Raveena, Vickash & Samantha Assisted in selling tickets without taking bulk tickets. Donation The most crucial aspect of any fund raising event is donation, and in relation to Seven Curry Food Sales it forms one part of a tri-part approach. The Selling of Tickets, Donations (Financial and Items) to offset grocery items and miscellaneous expenses and the physical help. To come short in any of these three areas would impede the success of this venture. I am profoundly grateful for the response by our members and well wishers who donated financially and in the form of grocery items. These individuals came forward on their own free will, apart from making general announcements of the items needed, there wasn’t any massive drive to seek out donation, those who donated did so out of the genuine believe in an Event that has served to raise funds to uplift this mandir. These generous acts of donations directly make those improvements possible. This is how donations are important. Aunty Polly (Anisa’s mom) donated US $100 which exchanges to Twenty Thousand Guyana Dollars, that initial donation was invested to print 1000 tickets and create four banners to advertise Seven Curry 2013, adding the help of our volunteers, 1000 tickets were sold. This automatically raised Four Hundred Thousand Dollars. From this example you can analyze the worth of that one single initial donation. To carry out an activity of this magnitude, donations is without a doubt one of the pillar for success. Ground Zero – The Day (27th&28th of July, 2013) Ground Zero or Seven Curry Day is bringing one month of planning, organizing, promoting and preparing into retrospect. All that have occurred and all that have been accomplished is just the lead-up to “The Day”. Seven Curry Day 2013 added to a long history of such successful endeavors, but the standout of this year activity was cooking in our new fully gas operational kitchen. To reach this stage and to actually operate this new cutting edge kitchen overshadows in my opinion, our promotion which yielded close to Six Hundred Thousand Dollars profit. Operation Seven Curry 2013 was like a well oil machine just ready to go into action and everyone who were apart of the activity during this weekend performed in a team environment that has long history of the savvy of how to pull off this mammoth event. The team I am referring to consisted of over Forty (40) persons of different demographics which made what is usually a monumental task seem so mundane. Great work, I congratulate and acknowledged this super effort and my heartfelt thank you to these individuals for their selfless contribution. Statistical Data of Seven Curry 2013 Expense 4 Banners $ 6,000 Tickets $12,000 Calalu $27,500 Kowah $12,000 Miscellaneous/Short Items $18,000 Black Bags/ Clear bags and cups 9,000 Market $37,500 Geera and Massala $9,000 Sweet Meat Items $23,000 Total $ 153,000 At close off time the total Tickets Enchased were 500 Financial Success of Seven Curry 2013 Ticket (1000) @ $400 Sold Out $400,000 Day Sales $171,800 Surplus Financial Donations $19,000 Grand Total Profit for Seven Curry 2013 $590,800 This represents the second successive year of making a profit of over Half Million Guyana Dollars and Also this Fund Raiser has the largest Profit margin of all time crushing, last year amount of $503,720. Conclusion The success of this year Seven Curry is another proof that our Mandir is performing exceptionally well within our known limitations. Our trade mark of hard work and determination have served us well and will continue make our mandir prosper in the right direction. Without a doubt we have forged ahead in conditions that were less than comfortable, dealt with and continue to deal with criticisms which are all negative and offer no positive solution to back those criticisms, and so our duty is simply to keep going and make positive contributions and let the negative criticisms remain just as nonsensical as there are. I deliberately caption my report “Overcoming Challenges … Continuing Progress” because of this new attempt to create division and to break-up. To what end I asked myself? I am ashamed and I am worried at the same time as a young Hindu. I am worried of the consequences of the action of these bitter individuals will have on our children. The answer I believe is to continue to make progress and we will rise above the challenges. I have also in this report stated our work and what is our short term goal, this I hope coupled with the success of our latest undertaking, motivate us to continuing to work towards our goals and achieve them with resounding success. Lastly I say thank you to Team Mon Repos Shiv Mandir for the hard work in making SEVEN CURRY 2013 a total success. Thank you, _________________________ PARMANAND .V.
