As protests in Tamil Nadu rage against the conviction and arrest of Jayalalitha, many people both within and outside the state have questioned these protests. Dont people take corruption seriously?, Are people from TN out of their minds?, Shouldnt the corrupt be punished?, they ask. I know they mean well, but they know and see very little, much like some folks in AAP. I am a member of AAP, a firm believer in anti-corruption and I still think Jayalalitha should be punished, but I also believe that more than the verdict it is the timing of it and the forces behind it that are causing the unrest. Let me show why: 1) When all the neighboring states denied water to TN, it was Jayalaitha who moved to the supreme court and secured water for the state during times of droughts. 2) Through Amma canteen, she provided food at affordable prices to the poor and helped dying farmers by directly buying vegetables from them. 3) She helped the middle class in chennai by enforcing the meter system on autos. Anyone who didnt abide by it was stripped of their licence. 4) By giving more powers to the police, it was she who maintained law and order in the state which existed only in the books when others came to power. 5) All evidences indicate that the timing of her arrest is politically motivated. Within days, SS wants to strengthen tge BJP in TN, and Modi declares that he does not need the help of those in jail to win elections. By all means, Jayalalitha was the best bet for TN be it in terms of development of the state or maintaining law and order in it. Instead, they now have a puppet, they might soon get a brain dead or a brainless. It is this apprehension that causes agitation. Jayalalitha should be punished, but why should 8 crore people suffer? #Jayalalitha
