[As requested by friends of HRNK, we have completed an English translation of the Laos 9 press conference in North Korea. We are fully aware of the inconsistencies and blatant exaggerations included in this script. This is by no means an endorsement of the story circulated by North Korean propaganda.] Episode 1 We are the students of Geumsung Primary School No. 1 Today our editorial board visited Geumsung Primary School No. 1 to interview the younger students among the nine students, who are Lee Kwang Hyuk, Ryu Cheol Ryong, Jang Kook Hwa, and Noh Jeong Young. Kim Jeong Gil (Head of School Administration): The North Korean government generously gave permission to these children to study and learn without feeling the absence of parents in Geumsung Primary School No. 1, which is the school with the best facilities in the whole country, located on top of Pyongyang’s Jangdaejae Hill. In the beginning, these students had a hard time adapting to the new environment. However, with the generous support of the teachers and the friendly help of the classmates, they are now successfully preparing to become one of the top leaders of the Prosperous and Thriving Joseon as they wish, enjoying each and every minute here, without any other concerns or difficulties. They are now in the senior class of the Advanced Middle School, busy preparing for graduation. The students who had a hard time learning in the beginning, worked hard and now can answer well to the teacher’s question. Noh Jeong Young (Senior Classroom 2 of Advanced Middle School): The answer is synthetic resins, synthetic fiber, and synthetic rubber. After class, we visited the dorm they live in. In the cozy living room, we asked them how they felt the first time they entered this wonderful school. Noh Jeong Young (Senior Classroom 2 of Advanced Middle School): At first, since they called it a “private institution”, I thought it was where orphans stay. But as they showed us around the school, and especially when I saw the dorm and heard that students live here, I really wanted to get into this school. When I first stepped in this building everything was so bright and fancy. I feel like we are getting more benefit than other children since we were able to make it into this school, where even only 1 out of 10 computer geniuses get accepted to. Lee Kwang Hyuk (Senior Classroom 4 of Advanced Middle School): I feel very proud to go to a school where it is very difficult to get into. When we go and observe the land suitable for farming of the clubs [inaudible], I have to wear the badge of Geumsung Primary School No. 1. This makes me stand out among all the other students from farming middle schools. When we asked them about their after school activities, they said that they usually study, play sports, watch videos and do different cultural activities. But Kook Hwa didn’t look okay so we asked if everything was okay. Then she said that she just came back from the hospital yesterday after getting appendectomy. We asked her about how she endured the whole surgery without her parents, and also about who visited her while she was in the hospital. Her answer was truly heartbreaking. Jang Kook Hwa (Senior Classroom 2 of Advanced Middle School): The evening I got the surgery my classmates Ulhwa and Seon Young [inaudible] came and slept together with me. Whenever I felt sick and threw up, Ulhwa and Seon Young [inaudible] helped me. The next day two other classmates came and slept with me. They helped me eat porridge. Also, my class donated a lot of snacks for me. Even the students from the computer class visited me and brought me snacks. Kim Dal Hae (Homeroom teacher of Senior Classroom 2): I was so surprised to hear that Kook Hwa got an appendectomy. The doctors took good care of her throughout the whole process of surgery. After the surgery, Kook Hwa got hospitalized in a children’s hospital. Since it was a children’s hospital there were a lot of mothers and they took good care of Kook Hwa. So we didn’t need to worry about Kook Hwa being alone in the hospital. The ladies were so kind to Kook Hwa that they almost spoiled her, I think. She definitely had a good time there. You must have heard from Kook Hwa about how many people visited her. She said that so many students she didn’t even know before from different classes – even the students from dance classes or computer classes - visited her in the hospital. Wishing we had taken a picture of that scene, we visited the school’s clinic. Kim Hye Young (Clinic Physician): Currently there are 4 doctors working in the clinic of Geumsung Primary School No. 1 to take care of the lives and health of the students. We not only provide medical treatment to the students who visit the clinic themselves, but we also work day and night to run daily medical checkups of all the 70 students living in the dorm. Each and every student has different physical and health condition. But since we have the responsibility to keep all of them healthy, we always conduct medical examinations, work with other hospitals if a student develops an illness, and we also operate surgeries if necessary. We also keep an eye on the student’s health after the surgery. But then one day Kook Hwa wouldn’t eat so I asked her what was wrong. Then I noticed that she was grasping her stomach, covered in cold sweat. I could tell that it was really bad. It looked like she had appendicitis. So I took her to the Pyongyang University Hospital at once. Luckily the pediatric surgeon was there so I asked for help. The surgeon took a look at her and opened an urgent meeting. The surgeon said that she needed surgery immediately or else it could become dangerous for her. So we did emergency surgery that day. The surgery went well, and she was fully recovered then discharged. But because she just had her surgery done, she lost her appetite and her patch was….[inaudible]. We decided to stay close to her to observe her recovery condition and treat her in case something happens. We also brought her some home food to stimulate her appetite. About a week ago, I found few cavities on Kwang Hyuk’s teeth; I think he fell asleep with full of sweets in his mouth. His molar teeth were continuously decaying, so we gave him some painkillers to see if pain would go away, but painkiller was a temporary expedient; he kept on expressing pain. We took him to nearest dental clinic in Joong-goo since big hospital was too far to go immediately, and it seemed better to see the specialist. At the clinic, Kwang Hyuk needed few nerves numbed to fill the cavities. Cavity filling went great without any scar, and now he is healthy as a horse. Cheol Ryong is also healthy, and Jeong Young… When Kwang Hyuk got cavities on his left teeth, Jeong Young got them on her right side, so when we took Kwang Hyuk to dentist, we also took Jeong Young and treated her as well, so she is also healthy. The sanctity of human life is important [inaudible], thus if we keep our duties in mind and think to take care of children who lost their parents as our own, there won’t be any difference since we are the mothers of our own children. So, we take care of them by even working at night, so they become the outstanding workers of our country. We visited gym where they are play volleyball with their classmate. Chelo Ryong said he plays soccer better than volleyball because he’s short, but it seems like he is pretty good at the serve. Kwang Hyuk said he is better in volleyball than in soccer, and it does seem like he hits pretty good. Look. Ah, but his ball touched the net, but he successfully tosses ball. Kook Hwa is just watching because of her recent surgery. Jeong Young is also okay with her volleyball skills. They are training and building up their physical fitness to become a pillar of the Rigid Joseon [inaudible]. After their game, we met them again and asked what would they like to do after they graduate. Ryu Cheol Ryong (Senior Classroom 4 of Advanced Middle School): After I graduate, I will join NKPA (North Korean People’s Army). I will join the navy. Lee Kwang Hyuk (Senior Classroom 4 of Advanced Middle School): I will apply for film academy. We asked him which actor he wanted to be like, and he was a man of spirit. Lee Kwang Hyuk (Senior Classroom 4 of Advanced Middle School): I want to be like Ko, Soon Young and in certain aspect, like Suk, Sung Jae. I want to become charming actor. My goal is to become a popular actor (or actor of North Korean People?) [inaudible]. Noh Jeong Young (Senior Classroom 2 of Advanced Middle School): After I graduate, I like to learn more handicraft work and give our leader my gratitude. Timid but ambitious Kook Hwa shyly expressed her dream to become a teacher. How beautiful are their dreams. They are confident to express their dreams because they believe their dreams will come true one day and have people helping them to reach their goal. The imperialist carried out Kim Dal Hae (Homeroom teacher of Senior Classroom 2): They transferred to our school last November. Our school is one of the best schools that every student in all around the world wants to attend, and our great leader Kim Jung Eun sent these students to Geumsung Primary School No. 1 for their education. First, two girls in my class, they are very thoughtful. They think about the stuff that even I couldn’t have thought about. I felt that when I read their diary. In Jeong Young’s diary, she said that she felt grateful with the country. I wasn’t sure what she meant by that at first. She said in her diary that it was she who didn’t know about her motherland. Now she knows that it was her motherland had been, has been and will continuously be giving love and care to them. She wrote - I would never commit crimes again. I did not know what was right and what was wrong. I did not know whether my actions were right, but to come at think about it, I have never done good thing for our country. I would never commit any wrongful action. I would never take to an evil course. I would never fall for their flattery and enticement. That was in her diary. Our principal, vice principal and other teachers ask our students about their school lives whether they have problem even a small problem. We have a school store, so if they are hungry… We also have barbershop, so when their hair gets long they could go to a barbershop. We have school clinic…. Our clinic physician and all the teachers, we all treated them and took care of them… Narrator Teacher’s story doesn’t end. She has a lot of stories to tell. Teacher (female) As for the characters of these four students, Lee Kwang-hyuk is brilliant. He might not become the brightest student ever, but I believe that he could be one of the best student at school. Noh Jeong-young is so active and has an inquiring mind. He keeps asking questions about such as mathematics. In addition, he tried to practice [inaudible] after he learned literature. Next thing I want to talk about is a journal. They have kept a journal, which is not just descriptive of their lives. Each journal is distinctive and they are honest in it. Kook-hwa is not interested in mathematics, but she likes reading literature, reciting poetry, and singing. I often saw her singing and recording when I visited her dorm room. When Kook-hwa was singing, Jeong-young, Kwang-hyuk, and Cheol-ryong sang along her. I am so happy to see them hanging out. They have lived together, so they are at ease with each other, joking and chatting freely. They ask each other if they have any questions, and discuss it. Cheol-ryong is very quiet. I had asked him to recite a poem. I was so touched to tears. The poem was entitled “Mother.” When he recited “I can’t live without my mother,” it touched my heart since he read it with sincerity. Jeong-young said that he wanted to write a song. The song started with “I wonder where she is. I wonder where she is going.” It was wonderful to listen to. Jeong-young read what he wrote before singing. “Whenever I had a meal, I wished it was made by my mom. Whenever I went to bed, I wish my mother was here with me. However, I don’t think about such things now. I have many mothers. I have a genuine mother, the beloved Great Leader.” He wrote that “I wonder where he is, and which way he is going. I want to see him.” All of us, include myself and students, cried. The teachers who were listening him were moved to tears as well. I didn’t think that Jeong-young could write like that. The students said that they had always thought of their mother, and could realize how they missed their mother while being loved by the Great Leader. They said that their genuine mother is the Great Leader, Kim Jong-un. Then, the class was full of tears. I deeply felt that the beloved Great Leader Kim Jong-un is their mother and father of them - Jeong-young, Kook-hwa, and Cheol-ryong. If these students become mature since they came to my school, I want to tell the world that the love and consideration of the Great Leader towards these students made them grow up. Teacher (male) In addition to the effort of teachers, these four students are learning the noble love of Great Leader towards future generations through television and newspaper. I believe that these students are experiencing benevolent love of the Great Leader, which is stronger than parents’ love. We all, teachers and students, will be their parents, brothers and sisters, and help them to be prepared for the future. Narrator The Great Leader always emphasized that you should take care of children who lost their parents with love of their mother and father. With the strong love of the Great Leader towards next generation, four students are growing into a future of the homeland which would continue to prosper. Dear children, go on proudly becoming a soldier of People’s Army, an actor, a handcraftman and a teacher as you wish, and supporting the future of your homeland. Don’t forget the love of the homeland which takes care of you, feeds you, and protect you. Go on proudly passing down the word that you have your country which gives you happiness and hope now, and take full responsibility for your future even though you lost your parents early. And you can’t live without this genuine mother’s love.
