As social workers you should discuss this with your clients...even those who are not transgender.....if appropriate to your position and agency rules......As far as if this could be personal in your own life or the life of a loved one.....This incident stresses the “importance of having a will” and after-death directives. Dont wait until you are sick or elderly to have these documents made.....you could die suddenly like this person did....just driving or traveling in a car puts you in danger of a sudden death...... You should name someone you can trust in your documents that will follow your wishes..... I was my brothers medical surrogate and had durable power-of-attorney and I made sure that his wishes were followed including in his obituary...... He wanted people to know the truth including that he has passed away due to complications of AIDS and wanted donations sent to the local AIDS agency he worked for in lieu of flowers. That was back in the early 1990s when people hardly ever discussed it publicly or published it.
