As some of you know, Im on the Board of SPOON. A couple years ago, we visited a baby house in Almaty with some medical colleagues. The caregiver was feeding a kid with CP, who was lying nearly supine. One of the doctors whispered to me, Can you hear him aspirating? Thats how so many kids like him get pneumonia and die. Since its start, SPOON has identified improper feeding as a serious issue for kids living in institutions and with disabilities. The good news is, its a relatively easy fix. With proper training and equipment, caregivers can reduce the risk of aspiration and greatly improve the nutrition of children who need it the most.
