As some of you know, we have ear crops scheduled or coming up soon. Here is an outline as to what you should expect when your Doberman Puppy receives their ear crop..... Before surgery the puppy will receive a pre-surgery checkup on the heart and other major systems. The surgery will then be performed. Pre-surgery pain medication will be given to reduce discomfort after the surgery. This will also be sent home with your pup to give them for 5 days after they go home. Rimadyl 100mg-1/2 tab once per day. Your puppy will be anesthetized with pre-anesthetic tranquilizers, sedatives, and isoflurane gas. Intravenous fluids will be started. IV fluids give a better outcome in recovery and allow the staff to quickly help if anything unusual happens during surgery. They also give a pain injection when the puppy is waking up. When the surgery is performed the ears will be glued and taped to a cup on the top of their head. They should stay this way until stitches are taken out at 10 days. The day stitches come out Doc will post the ears. He or I will teach you how to post them as well. Almost all ears will stand, but some can take up to 6 weeks or longer of taping and posting. It isnt guaranteed, but your persistence is the key. Homecare Hints.....Apply some triple-antibiotic ointment to the edge of the ear 1-2 times per day to keep the ears soft and to aid healing. If they dig at the cups or ears excessively you will need to get an Elizabeth collar (E-collar) from your local veterinarian. Thank you for trusting Dr Meier to do the surgery on your Doberman Puppy. If you like the results, please tell others, as he loves to do ear crops on this fantastic breed!!!!! And remember......I am just a phone call away.......Mary...641-330-2898
