As stated elsewhere, the issue of literal or symbolic interpretation cannot be decided (i.e., we will find out whether this will literally happen when the events of the eschaton occur; until then, we are not meant to know), but the reader is supposed to think of the literal image behind the metaphor and feel the horrifying power of the picture.
