As the AHC Clinic at Vanderbilt grows, we want to share the experiences of our AHC families. As a leading medical center and the leading researcher of a treatment for AHC, Vanderbilt is an incredible partner to the AHC Foundation. Following are thoughts from Mollie Erpenbeck, Mom to Austin, 4: As I wasn’t satisfied with the level of care Austin was receiving, I decided to take him to the newly opened Vanderbilt Clinic for AHC. With AHC being so rare, I have willingly given doctors and researchers the benefit of the doubt, and came to understand that Austin’s care would never be on par with typical kids or even those kids with more widely known diseases. Most doctors have never heard of AHC, let alone know how to treat it. Then the AHC Clinic at Vanderbilt opened and I knew I wanted to take Austin. Upon arrival at the Clinic, I met with Dr Ess and his very welcoming staff of doctors. He was thoroughly examined, with a Q & A at the end. Dr. Ess spent a good amount of time with Austin, and I didn’t feel rushed. I quickly learned that this is what we have been missing for the past 4 years. Knowing that Dr. Ess and his dedicated team are also one of the major researchers of AHC, made the trip equally beneficial for both parties. I will definitely be making the AHC Clinic at Vanderbilt our new provider for Austin.
