As the EBOLA epidemic escalates, we have read recommendations from overnight epidemiologists and virologists. We have heard calls for the Health Minister to be fired. We have heard calls for a massive public awareness campaign. We are hearing all kinds of recommendations, even though this outbreak in West Africa is unprecedented. Some people have found a perfect moment to ply their trade of politics during this unfortunate national crisis. The folks, including journalists, who we had to argue with for days to convince them that Ebola was really in Liberia, are today accusing health officials of ineptitude. A highly educated senator even floated a conspiracy theory that the outbreak was a design to attract donors support. Ordinary individuals are also skeptical of the outbreak as shown in the attached video. It is a fact that the Ellen Johnson Sirleaf led government is corrupt. It is also true that the government is under-performing. However, the government is only a real reflection of Liberians. We are our own problem. Instead of apportioning blames, let us begin to do the very simple things to halt the spread of this disease. We should first believe that the disease is real. We must change our attitude. Even with George Bush as president of Liberia and Dr. Sanjay Gupta, as Health Minister, Ebola will strive if we continue to exhibit the careless attitude towards this disease. Let us be disciplined for once as a people. My attention was drawn to this video by a foreign friend. He was shocked, but I know that we are a bunch of strange people.
